Reading is the key to learning. Children throughout the country are invited to join the SUMMER STARS READING CHALLENGE at their local library. Children can borrow any children’s books they like throughout the summer and get rewards for reading along the way. It’s completely free and open to all !
Children can sign up at Greystones Library, keep a record of the books they read on their reading card and gets recognition and encouragement for each step along the way. At the end of the programme, all children who participate receive their own certificate of achievement at a special awards event.
Students from St. Brigid’s have been participating in this initiative for the last number of years in Greystones Library. For some children we have seen it has been a ‘launchpad’ for them: turning them into real ‘book worms’.
Perhaps your child loves reading. Perhaps they are reluctant readers. Maybe their school reports have recommended making more time for reading. Maybe you are concerned about the so called ‘Summer Slide’ where a child’s reading ability can slip back over the summer months. Which ever of these is the case, the local library’s Summer reading challenge is an opportunity to keep up reading over the school holidays.
We would LOVE to hear about the books children read over the summer and hear your recommendations.
