Newsletter 18 – Jan 19th 2024
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Happy Friday. It is nice to see a slight lengthening in the day even though it has been very cold all this week – a reminder to us all to layer up when out and about.
Céad Mile Fáilte –We extend a very warm welcome to Davi who joined Senior Infants in our school on Monday. The boys and girls in Room 2 have been very kind to Davi and are making him feel right at home. Maith sibh a pháistí !
Slán le Ms. Dent – Ms. Dent finished up at the school yesterday to commence her maternity leave. We wish her all the best – exciting times ahead. Mr. Behan will be covering for Ms. Dent until the end of the school year.
Birthday Greetings – Seven of our students are celebrating birthdays this week. They are Elijah Rikje (11yrs) Raymond Pender (9yrs), Kayden Colaco (11yrs), Nicole Byrne (12yrs), Senan McCabe (10yrs), Leo Looney (9yrs) and Amberr Boden (12yrs). We wish them all a very happy birthday and hope they enjoy their special day.
New Library Books – The Library Book Grant we received from the DES was used to buy lots of new books for our class libraries. A big thank you to parents Sheena McCabe, Inesa O’ Gallagher, Kate Fitzmaurice and Nicola Arrigan who sorted through all these books from a cold and draughty foyer and then distributed them to the different classes – no mean task. The children were so excited when they saw the ladies arriving in laden down with piles of books. Fun times ahead for our boys and girls !!
3rd Class Swimming – Our two third classes headed off for their first swimming lesson of 2024 on Thursday. Although it was a chilly walk down to Shoreline, the children enjoyed their time in the pool and were excited to be back doing swimming lessons. A big thank you to Ms. Woodcock, Ms Finnerty, Helena and the parent volunteers who accompanied the to their lesson.
Primary Language Sampler Program This is our third year participating in this program. The boys and girls in our 5th and 6th classes will be learning Spanish for the next eight weeks with Spanish tutor Elena. In the words of Minister Foley “The programme will give the children a unique opportunity to be exposed to foreign language learning at a young age and will help equip the children with the skills they need to live in a globalised world.” This can only be a good thing.
Grandparents Day – As part of Catholic Schools Week (21st January – 28th of January) we have invited the Grandparents in our community to our school on Wednesday 24th January to celebrate Grandparents Day. An invitation was sent to all parents yesterday with all the relevant details. On the day, Grandparents will have the opportunity to visit their grandchildren’s classes, participate in a simple prayer service in the hall and enjoy a well-deserved cup of tea at the end of their visit. Grandparents Day is always a very special day at the school, and we are very excited about their visit next week.
Health and Safety
- There has been a large increase in the usual winter viral infections among children. If your child is feeling unwell, we urge you to keep them home from school in a bid to stop the spread of infections.
- Our Junior Infants had their vaccinations at the school on Monday. They were so brave, and the vaccinations didn’t seem to knock a feather out of them. Well done boys and girls
- We would ask that you encourage your children to cross with lollipop lady at the pedestrian crossing on Trafalgar Road and not to attempt to cross between cars.
Internet Safety – If your child has access to a mobile device, we would strongly urge you to monitor their online activity.
No After School Basketball for 4th Class There will be NO after school BASKETBALL for 4th class next Tuesday 23 Jan as Cormac is not available. Basketball will be back on 30th Jan.
The first month of the new year presents us with an opportunity to think about our hopes and dreams for the year ahead. Our hope here at St. Brigid’s for 2024 is that school shall continue to be a place where all children enjoy learning, develop strong relationships, and continue to grow each day socially, emotionally, and academically.
As always, thank you for your continued support.
Le meas,
Máire Costello
Principal
