Drop off & Collection for Junior Infants

DROP OFF & COLLECTION
JUNIOR INFANTS

Sunday 23rd August

Dear Parents / Guardians,

As you already know, our school will reopen on Thursday 27th August. We want to ensure your children experience a calm, safe and fun first day despite significant restrictions imposed due to Covid 19. Traditionally in years past, the Junior Infants always attend for a shorter day for the first two weeks in order to settle in successfully. We have found this works well and will continue with this practice for this year.

While nothing is risk free and we are being asked to take a leap of faith as we reopen our doors, the Board of Management and the School Leadership Team have been working extremely hard to ensure a safe as possible return to school for all pupils and staff on Thursday. We have now finalised our plans for drop-off and collection of our three Junior Infant classes. Please be aware that these plans are not set in stone and will be under ongoing review.

As stated in the Department of Education and Skills Guidelines, visitors to the school (including parents and guardians) will be severely restricted. Unfortunately, therefore, you will only be able to accompany your child to his/her classroom for the first two days. At the end of the day, your child will be collected from a designated area in the playground.

The most notable changes for this year are:

-that each class will have a specific entry and exit gate (See below for details)
-later drop off times for Junior Infants for Thursday 27th and Friday 28th August only
-there will be no lining up in the yard at drop off time in the morning as the children will go straight to their classrooms with the exception of the first two days back – (See below)

Drop off and Collection

Drop off Thursday 27th August – Staggered – 9.30am & 9.40am

Drop off Friday 28th August – Staggered – 9.30am & 9.40am

Drop off from Monday 31st August onwards – 8.50am for all Junior Infants

All Junior Infants will enter and exit the school grounds through Gate 2 which is the wooden gates on Trafalgar Road beside The Fat Fox.

Entry to the school on the first two days will be staggered – Your child’s class has been split into 2 groups to allow you and your child to enter the school building on a staggered basis. Each group will get a specific time to arrive at the school. We will advise you of your time in an email tomorrow.

For the first two days, one parent only will be allowed accompany their Junior Infant Child into their classroom so that physical distancing can be maintained as much as possible.

All adults will be required to wear a face covering and sanitise their hands on entering the building.

Children will be given an assigned place to sit.

Parents will be required to leave promptly to allow for the next group of children and parents to enter the room. A member of staff will be present to guide you to your exit point.

From Monday 31st August, parents will not be permitted to accompany their child into the classroom. The children should be dropped to the wooden gate where they will be met by their class teachers who will bring them safely to their classrooms.

Collection – 11.50am up until Wednesday 9th September and 1.40pm from Thursday 10th September
The children will be lined up alphabetically and brought to designated collection zones in the black yard by their class teachers. The children can be collected from these zones. In the interest of social distancing we would ask that you do not encroach beyond the boundary of the basketball court at collection time. We would also ask that you leave the grounds promptly to facilitate the use of the yard and basketball court by the older children..

It is imperative that

-adults do not come within 2m of each other
-parents do not try to have meetings with members of staff in the playground at drop-off and collection times
-meetings between parents and teachers can only take place by prior arrangement. For everyone’s safety, this may be done via phone calls or emails
-all parents adhere to the drop-off and collection plans as outlined above
Working together we hope to be able to progress the reopening in as safe a manner as possible for all. We would ask all parents to familiarise themselves with the above drop-off and collection routines for the safe delivery and collection of pupils from school. Please be patient as we endeavour to embed these necessary precautionary and protective practices at the beginning of the school year

I apologise for the amount of information contained in this email. I know there is an awful lot to take in. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you are unclear about anything.

This is a huge week for us all as we return to school and we really appreciate your support as we try to safely reopen the school building.

Kind regards,

Máire Costello
Principal
